Automated Testing of Medical Devices with Collaborative Robot | SCHÖLLY Fiberoptic GmbH
In this project, we implemented an intelligent automation system for testing medical devices designed for use in highly sensitive and regulated environments. The solution was deployed in a highest-class cleanroom that meets the strict requirements of medical device manufacturing.
Key system components include:
- Collaborative robot xArm6 – chosen for its excellent price-performance ratio. It performs all physical handling of the devices fully autonomously, safely, and with high precision.
- PLC-based control system – serves as the central control unit, synchronizing operations between all devices and communication protocols.
- Communication module with vacuum testing machine – custom-developed to the client’s specifications, ensuring reliable data exchange and precise control of the testing process.
How the system works:
- Device gripping – The robot picks up the device from the prepared area.
- Placement in the testing station – It precisely positions the device inside the vacuum testing machine.
- Test execution – The PLC controller starts the test cycle and collects the results.
- Result evaluation – Based on the acquired data, the system classifies the device as pass or fail.
- Sorting – Valid devices proceed to the next production stage, while defective ones are automatically separated.
